If you’re looking for a hauntingly good time, great food, and an excellent draft beer selection, head over to Stone’s Public House in Ashland. Located right in the center of town, literally steps away from the train, the historic location is perfect for a good pub night out. Surprisingly, Stone’s doesn’t offer just the run of the mill standard pub fare but offers a nice selection of entrees to choose from with a ton of history and a few ghosts to go along with it. Stone’s also has a great upstairs function room that is available for large groups and parties and they do a nice job of hosting events for you as well should you need it.
The garlic shrimp appetizer is delectable with all the artery-clogging butter you could ask for. It is served up with a healthy bit of garlic to go with it just to make sure that all that butter can get unstuck somehow. The small plates are small and won’t fill you up however there is a good selection of sandwiches that are quite tasty if you choose not to indulge in one of the entree selections for dinner. I’d recommend the short ribs or Salmon for dinner as both are top notch. The other entrees are prepared well and are above average for the area.
Bands play on many nights during the week in the bar and the local flavor of the entertainment makes you feel like you’re right at home in New England. What more could you ask for? A haunted pub and restaurant, good beer and wine, a friendly staff, good food, and live music.
In the summer, try eating outdoors in the patio area. Stone’s has had the outdoor seating area fenced off and it is very private for being right in the center of town. You’ll just have to stop mid-conversation if a train goes by which literally shakes the building and the whistle might just make you throw your drink in shock. The location isn’t great but the ghosts don’t seem to mind.
Read up on the history of the Inn and Pub in any of the many books that have featured it or check out Ghost Hunters on the History channel and watch their version of the tales.
Great for families during the early dining hours, terrific for a night out with friends for live music and an all around winner for most looking for something a bit different than just your average chain restaurant.
